Be Careful and Stay Safe
Cheri J. Meiners, M.Ed.
Be Careful and Stay Safe

The world can seem so perilous, especially where our children are concerned. But even very young children can learn basic skills for staying safe in ordinary situations and preparing for emergencies. Without scaring kids (or alarming adults), this book about safety for kids teaches little ones how to avoid potentially dangerous situations, ask for help, follow directions, use things carefully, and plan ahead. Includes questions, activities, and safety games that reinforce the ideas being taught.

Using the Free Spirit Learning to Get Along® series

A Minnesota educator writes, "Before I started teaching I worked in the St. Cloud area as an after-school program manager. One of the districts had a grant to work with children with special needs, and one particular school had a high number of behavior issues. The school kept a library of Free Spirit books children could read when they got into trouble or needed downtime. This was part of the discipline process—the focus was on helping kids understand what respect means. I would read a book with the child and we would talk about how it feels to be hurt or picked on. The children responded to the needed quiet time and one-on-one attention."
