Respect and Take Care of Things
Cheri J. Meiners, M.Ed.
Respect and Take Care of Things

Everything has a place. Things last longer when we take care of them. Showing respect, responsibility, and stewardship are social skills that even young children can relate to—because they have things they value. This book encourages children to pick up after themselves, put things back where they belong, and ask permission to use things that don’t belong to them. It also teaches simple environmental awareness: respecting and taking care of the earth. Includes ideas for adult-led activities and discussions.

Reviews

“These titles are great starting points for discussions about the expectations in your own home, or to reinforce what’s being taught at school. They also tie in very nicely with character education.”—Kate Winn, This Mom Loves blog

“It would be wonderful if these and the other lovely books in the 'Learning to Get Along' series could be dropped from the air by the thousands over every city and town throughout the world.”—Catholic Parent

In the Real World

Using the Free Spirit Learning to Get Along® series

A Minnesota educator writes, "Before I started teaching I worked in the St. Cloud area as an after-school program manager. One of the districts had a grant to work with children with special needs, and one particular school had a high number of behavior issues. The school kept a library of Free Spirit books children could read when they got into trouble or needed downtime. This was part of the discipline process—the focus was on helping kids understand what respect means. I would read a book with the child and we would talk about how it feels to be hurt or picked on. The children responded to the needed quiet time and one-on-one attention."
