Publicist/Writer

Free Spirit Publishing, a supplementary children’s and educational publisher, seeks a creative and energetic full-time publicist to promote our award-winning titles and authors. The successful candidate will have excellent communication abilities, especially superior writing skills, to pitch to a variety of platforms including traditional and social media. The publicist will be responsible for writing press releases and pitch letters, and will assist authors with blog posts, articles, and conference proposals. The successful candidate must be able to manage, develop, and guide Free Spirit authors through their books’ promotional process.

Required Education and Skills:
  • B.A. degree in Communications, English, or another relevant field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ equivalent work experience
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in social media as a promotions tool and for relationship-building
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills
  • Familiarity with consumer and trade segments of the publishing industry
  • Knowledge of the educational publishing industry is a plus
  • Computer software and database experience—Cision and NetGalley—is a plus
  • Travel is required

Designer

Free Spirit Publishing, an educational and children’s book publisher, seeks a creative and energetic, full-time designer to join our in-house design team. The ideal candidate will facilitate production of books, promotional materials, and other projects from rough-draft design to finished product. Responsibilities include:
  • Developing concept ideas for book covers and interiors
  • Production, preflighting, and transmitting of book files
  • Image manipulation and color correction
  • Sourcing and reviewing stock photography, artwork, and fonts
  • Working with freelance illustrators
  • Designing and producing branded marketing materials 
Required Education and Skills
  • Post-secondary education in graphic design/typesetting/publishing production or minimum of 3 years equivalent work experience
  • Proficient and comfortable with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications is a plus
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills
  • Experience with and understanding of licensing options for fonts and images
  • Strong knowledge of design trends, typography, and color
  • Book or publication design and layout experience is a plus
