Life is better with a friend. That’s true for everyone. Some kids have lots of friends. Others have a few. Either way is great! Make a Friend, Be a Friend helps young readers find ways to—you guessed it!—make friends and be a better friend.

That doesn’t mean making and being friends is a snap. Even though it’s natural, it doesn’t always feel that way. The ideas in this book can help. Children learn:
  • how to find and make friends
  • ways to show you want to be a friend
  • how to be a good friend
  • what to do when times get tough
A special feature, What Would You Do? A Story Starring YOU, invites readers to practice making friends and solving friendship problems. Includes a glossary of terms at the back of the book to equip and empower children with the vocabulary they need.

Excellent advice in the book that brought on great conversation

Navigating how to make, keep and be a good friend isn't easy for young kids. Make a Friend, Be a Friend made the topic fun, while also being informative. My girls (ages 5 and 8) say that their favorite part was learning tactics to MAKE more friends. My favorite chapters were 4 & 5 about how to BE a good friend and what to do when times get tough. This is super helpful advice for this age group! My girls were asking questions and engaged throughout all 6 of the chapters, we had a great conversation afterwards about scenarios that have happened in the past, about their friendships and mine. They listened intently to the ideas and tactics, all written in a light hearted, fun and engaging way.

I highly recommend this book. We'll be reading it a few more times, I'm sure, as this is a topic that comes up often and is so important.

As a teacher and parent... I loved this book!

“Make a Friend, Be a Friend” just moved to the top of the ranks in my classroom for teaching my kindergarteners about friendship. If you’re shopping for friendship books, you know making friends is hard for lots of kids. While there are many lovely books about friendship on the market, their subtle messages are often lost on the kids that need them the most. “Make a Friend, Be a Friend” actually decodes the friendship process using language that kids can understand and it’s really funny too! What set this book apart for me were the practical action steps that kids can use when forming and navigating friendships. I’ll be working through this chapter by chapter with my kindergarteners, but this would be a great independent read for kids ages 7-10. The book also comes with a fantastic downloadable “Leader’s Guide” filled with great questions and activities to extend the learning. The friendship strategies in this book will connect with kids and the goofy humor will keep them coming back for more. I can’t wait to share this with my students!
